General Rules

All Classes

Vintage Drag Racing Association General Rules- All Classes

  1. All Vehicles must pass a technical inspection performed by a Track representative and follow NHRA guidelines.
  2. Prior to the start of the race season all drivers must determine if championship points for the season will be awarded to the driver or the vehicle. Drivers may not cross championship points between classes. Once a decision has been made it will be locked in for the race season and cannot be altered.
  3. Races are single elimination and based upon a sportsman ladder. All classes are Dial -in Handicap racing using the Tru-Start sportsman's tree. Tru-Start simply means that if a slower vehicle were to leave the starting line first and red light, the red light/win light will not appear on the starting line or score boards until the second vehicle has left the starting line. This in theory makes both racers have to cut good reactions times. If both racers were to red light on the same pairing the racer with the closest reaction time to .000 seconds will be awarded the win.
  4. Qualifying for all classes is based on the driver's best reaction time during qualifying. #1 qualifier is the closest to a .000 positive reaction time. In the event of multiple drivers having the same reaction times, the driver whose reaction time came first in actual time during qualifying will be awarded the lower qualified position. If a vehicle is unable to make the qualifying sessions, the Race Masters has the authority to enter the unqualified vehicle into the worst qualified position in the class with no qualifying points awarded. Lane choice in the first round of competition is awarded to the better qualified driver. In the rounds after lane choice is determined by the best reaction time from the previous round between the two drivers.
  5. Bye Run's: A Bye Run may be awarded to a driver when there is an odd number of vehicles within a class. The driver may choose to take the run as a "Single" or "Break the Beams" by rolling the vehicle past the starting line beams taking the round win. Vehicles must "Break the Beam" under their own power and cannot be assisted.
  6. Broke Bye: A Broke Bye is a situation where a vehicle has broken during competition and is unable to continue. The driver who is paired with the broken racer will treat the round as if it were a Bye Run. The driver who broke will not be awarded any points for a round loss.
  7. Class Ladders. Class ladders are generated after the final round of qualifying for each classification FH/IN, GAS, MS and N/E. Once the Race Master has posted the ladders they will not be altered in anyway. Class ladders will be posted at the track Tech Shack each Class Representatives pit space and with the Race Master. All racers are responsible for checking qualifying status before eliminations and during the succeeding rounds.
  8. The Race Master has the authority to ask the track for permission to have consolation for first round losers.  Consolation is based upon time in the race facilities schedule and weather.
  9. Rain-Out Policy. In the event of a Rain-Out, Drivers will be awarded points based upon the classes last completed round of competition. No further make updates will be scheduled. The race event will be complete.  Amendment (1/1/2023) If weather prompts track management to cancel the day's event prior to the event's start time and date, the event will be considered cancelled. The event can potentially be rescheduled if availability at the same track is possible. The Race Master and President will collectively make a decision on rescheduling.
  10. Power adders. Nitrous oxide is prohibited. Blowers are limited in size to 14-71 and smaller.
  11. All vehicles must be compliant with the rules of the class they wish to compete in.
  12. Behavior: The VDRA is a family-oriented group, and we hold ourselves to a high standard. Any driver, crew member, or associated party with the VDRA who acts inappropriately to track staff, fans, VDRA board members and fellow drivers or crew members will be subject to a verbal warning at first offense. If these actions proceed the individual(s) will be asked to leave the event or banded from any future VDRA functions.
  13. In order to race with the VDRA you must be a registered member of the VDRA. Annual dues are $50. Members will receive purse money provided by sponsors and trophies and awards provided by the club.

VINTAGE DRAG RACING ASSOCIATION ELECTRONIC RULES AND GUIDLINES

DELAY BOXES/DEVICES

Delay boxes prohibited in all categories. A delay box or delay device is defined as any device (electric, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, etc.) built for the express purpose of creating a delay between release of trans-brake or line-loc button, or release of foot or hand brake, or release of clutch pedal/lever, and the resultant action of the vehicle. Changeable vehicle components, legal unto themselves (solenoids, throttle-linkage components, hoses, springs, etc.), even though the component may affect the reaction time of the vehicle in relation to the driver action, is not considered a delay device. Wiring may consist of a single continuous wire from a power source to a switch (or button), and a single continuous wire from the switch to the trans brake or line-loc solenoid. One splice (no quick disconnect) is permitted from the two-step to the solenoid (i.e., between the switch and the solenoid).

All switches, buttons, wiring, solenoids, etc. must be for normal automotive use, i.e., not intended to create a delay (adjustable or non-adjustable) between release of the button and the resultant action of the solenoid. All line lock/trans brake wiring before and after the switch must be separate from any other wiring and fully visible. Computer wiring, sensors, relays, and the like may not be wired to the solenoid wiring. Two-steps or other rev limiters that are adjustable by thumbwheel, replaceable chips, and the like may not be within the driver’s reach and will be located outside the driver compartment. Any system that does not fit the above description is prohibited. Further, discovery of a delay device, adjustable or non-adjustable, at any time following technical inspection will be grounds for immediate disqualification from the event.

IGNITION

Two steps and Rev Limiters are permitted for the soul purpose of protecting damage to the engine or drivetrain. These devises are not permitted for any down track tuning applications. No programmable or digital ignition systems allowed in any classes. Each car in competition must have a positive action on/off switch, capable of de-energizing the entire ignition system, in good working order, located within easy reach of the driver. “Momentary contact” switch prohibited. All ignition systems and/or components wiring harnesses and attachments must utilize those supplied by the ignition system manufacturer. The wiring harness must be used in an unaltered manner consistent with the manufacturer’s installation and instruction books. All wiring associated with the ignition system must be fully visible, labeled, and traceable. Points style distributers, HEI’s, Magnetos and crank triggers are permitted. All removable or pin-type timing devices are prohibited. Two-steps or other rev limiters that are adjustable by thumbwheel, replaceable chips, and the like may not be within the driver’s reach and will be located outside the driver compartment. The use of any programmable multi-point rev limiter and/or a rate-of-acceleration rpm limiter is prohibited.

COMPUTER

A computer is defined as any device (electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, etc.) that activates any function of, or in any way affects the operation of, the vehicle based on measurement, sensing, processing, etc. of any data related to the performance of the vehicle. Data collected from data collection devises may not be entered into a computer program that generates predicted elapsed times.

DATA RECORDERS

Data recorders may be used to record functions of a vehicle so long as they do not activate any function on the vehicle. For data recorder applications, the transmission or display of any vehicle performance data (e.g., wheel speed, driveshaft speed, vehicle acceleration, etc.) gathered or processed by the data recorder, to the driver or any remote location, during the run, is prohibited. This data may be reviewed (printout, replay, etc.) only after the run. Discovery of a device that displays, indicates, or transmits “on track,” “track location,” or “elapsed time”-type data will be grounds for immediate disqualification from the event. Data devices permitted include wheel speed, driveshaft speed, exhaust temperature, oil pressure, fuel pressure, transmission temperature, water temperature, supercharger PSI, tachometer with tattletale and the use of a weather station. Traditional (needle) gauges and digital display gauges are permitted.

CAMERAS

Images from any camera permitted under this section are permitted to be used for competition/analytical purposes only. One camera permitted. No video monitors permitted in or on the car. Video may not be used in any way to determine track position in real time. Cameras must be securely attached to the vehicle with appropriate fasteners. Cameras may not be attached with suction cups, wire ties, hose clamps etc. For any camera mounted external to any vehicle, all mounting brackets, associated fasteners, hardware, etc. from the camera to the vehicle attachment point must be metal. No plastic or nonmetallic components permitted. For all vehicles, attachment to the driver, the driver’s helmet, or the steering wheel/handlebars are prohibited.

ENGINE/TRAMISSION

All functions of engine, fuel, timing, clutch, and throttle must be a direct function of the driver. Electronic Fuel injection is prohibited. The function of shifting the transmission must be performed by the driver. No air or timer-controlled devices permitted.
